About the Collection
Callinectes sapidus. The beautiful swimmer.
In 1896, a Smithsonian zoologist named Mary Jane Rathbun classified the Atlantic blue crab and gave it a name that reads more like poetry than taxonomy: Callinectes sapidus. Beautiful, savory swimmer. She saw what watermen and coastal families had seen for generations, and she wrote it down as science.
We take that seriously.
The Species Guide is our attempt to render the creatures of the American coast the way the great naturalists rendered them — with care, with anatomical honesty, and with respect for the fact that these species were here long before we were and will remain long after. Each design is a study, not a stylization. The crab in your hands wearing this shirt is drawn from the same species that has fed families from the Chesapeake to the Gulf for four centuries.
More species will follow. Stone crab. Dungeness. Oyster. Rockfish. Bluefish. Not as a marketing plan, but as an ongoing document.
